Brick Walls: Your Questions
How high can a front garden wall be?
A wall facing a road used by vehicles, or the pavement beside it, can normally be up to 1 metre high without planning permission; elsewhere the limit is 2 metres. If the house is listed or sits in a conservation area, speak to Guildford Borough Council before building, as the limits can be tighter.
Why do some brick walls crack, and how do you prevent it?
Cracks usually come from a shallow or weak footing, or from a long run of brickwork with nowhere to expand and contract. We build on a concrete foundation dug down to firm ground and include movement joints in longer walls where they are needed.
Can a new wall match my house bricks?
We will source the closest match we can, and sometimes reclaimed bricks are the best way to blend with an older property. New brickwork always looks a little fresher at first and tones down as it weathers.
Do you build retaining walls?
We build low retaining walls for raised beds, planters and small changes in level around driveways and patios. Anything holding back a significant height of soil may need an engineered design, and we will tell you if that applies.
