How tall can my garden fence be without planning permission?
Under permitted development in England you can normally go up to 2 metres at the back and sides. Beside a road used by vehicles, or the pavement next to one, the limit drops to 1 metre. Listed buildings and some conservation areas have their own rules, so ask Guildford Borough Council first if either applies to your home.
Should I choose concrete or timber fence posts?
Concrete posts will not rot and suit slotted panels with concrete gravel boards, which makes them the longest-lasting option. Timber posts have a softer look and can be cut to any height, which helps with closeboard and post-and-rail fences. We will recommend whichever suits your fence style and ground.
Which way should the fence face?
By custom the smoother, “good” face points outwards towards the neighbour or the road, with the posts and rails on your side. It is a convention rather than a legal rule, and we are happy to discuss it with neighbours if a fence is shared.
Can you fence a sloping garden?
Yes. Panels can be stepped down the slope at each post, or a closeboard fence can be built to follow the ground so there are no triangular gaps underneath.
